Greetings! |
As we all roll deeper into the autumn season we are reminded that as with nature, we too require time to cool down, turn inside, cleanse, get lots of rest and relaxation and slow down. What are you doing to support yourself during this miraculous transition Mother Earth is bestowing upon us?
We encourage all of us to pay special attention to slowing down and gaining mindfullness. Whether it be meditation, yoga, cooking for friends and family or taking evening walks with your pooch, allow yourself to breathe deeply and sleep soundly.
This is also the time of the year when kindness is especially important. The holiday season can sometimes bestow stress and anxiety on us with all the running around, present purchasing, traffic and retail lines so let's remember a smile is worth a thousand words.
Speaking of gifts, we will be emailing you out a coupon code in just a short while to be used for a special package of hemp foods that can be ordered and delivered in time for the holidays to your friends and loved ones that will be sure to spark up their kitchens and bodies.
We offer you an invitation to curl up with a blanket and read through our Messenger with a nice cup of tea or quickly peruse to find your favorites like our Recipe of the Month, our Quick Tips & Hints section or check out our new featured blogs by our sponsors highlighted in the column to the right. Whatever it is that you enjoy most both in our newsletter and in this holiday season, we appreciate your role within the Manitoba Harvest family and are happy to be able to share the wonders of fresh hemp foods with you.
We also continue to offer you the opportunity to share your thoughts and feelings with us. Please feel free to email us here with any and all thoughts, ideas and requests you may have for the Manitoba Messenger. |

Manitoba Harvest on CBC National News |
CBC National News
A great accomplishment for Manitoba Harvest and its founders. Being acknowledged in this way validates that we are headed in the right direction. Released Oct. 31st:
Winnipeg, Manitoba (October 31, 2007) - An occupation that's chance of success was once was joked to be a 'pipe dream' is now one of the hottest growth businesses in Canada. The hemp plant, previously shunned and confused with marijuana, is the new 'poster child' for the healthy organic food movement throughout North America. A trio of youthful hemp pioneers from Winnipeg that went out on a limb to start Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods & Oils in the 1990's, persevered through tough times and are reaping rewards for the seeds they sowed. CBC TV profiled the company on the business feature 'Made in Canada.' To view the segment please click here. Enjoy! |
Recipe of the Month
Butternut Squash and Red Bell Pepper soup with Ginger and Hemp |
Ingredients:
1 large Butternut Squash
3 large Leeks, whites only
1/4 large Red Bell Pepper
1 Organic Vegetable Boullion Cube
4 T fresh grated Ginger
2 C Manitoba Harvest Hemp Seeds
1 T Coconut Oil or Olive Oil
1 t Cayenne Pepper (optional)
Serves: 6
Preparation: 1 hour
Directions:
Bake squash at 350F for 45 minutes or just until a fork is easily removable when poked into it. Set aside to cool. While baking squash, chop leeks and red bell pepper and combine with all but a pinch of the grated ginger in a large warmed pan with coconut or olive oil and saute on medium for 3 minutes or until soft. Scoop squash into pan with leeks, ginger and red bell pepper, mix and let simmer togther for about 5 minutes. In a seperate large pot combine 6 cups water with boullion cube and warm until blended. Begin to add the vegetable stock one cup at a time to the squash mixture until creamy but very thick. Transfer and blend squash mixture, remaining stock, cayenne and hemp seeds in blender or Vita-Mix in batches until all is blended. To have soup with texture pulse your blender slightly, for creamier soup blend on high. Save a small amount of shelled hemp seeds for garnish that will accompany the grated ginger you set aside earlier to float on top of this lovely soup. This recipe comes from the lovely Leah Howe from Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York. Thanks Leah for warming our hearts and our bodies.
We were served this soup by Leah herself and were very much warmed both by her hospitality and the wonderful flavor of this perfect autumn soup. Enjoy!

Testimonials of the Month |
Dear Manitoba Harvest,
After trying your Hemp Bliss vanilla milk today, I just had to write you! Your hemp milk is an absolute taste sensation! I have waxed and waned between rice and soy milk for years, but have not been satisfied with either. I don't like all the processing that goes into soy milk and I find rice and almond milks to lack that "creamy" factor, as well as being way too low in protein for my needs. I just had to say I am so, so impressed with your product. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
All the best,
Terra S.
Edmonton, Alberta
Terra,
We thank you for your support and thank you for taking the time to share your opinion and joy. Hope you enjoy your package you'll be receiving for being chosen as our testimonial of the month. Healthy Regards, Manitoba Harvest
A note from Heather:
You guys probably already make smoothies. I make them and sell them at our canteen for sporting events at our high school. The kids love them. I put a banana and oh, about 1/4c of Manitoba Harvest shelled hemp seed in my Vitamix and blend, then I add about 2c of frozen strawberries. You can add a small amount of strawberry jam or a healthier sweetener to taste. This is as thick and creamy as ice cream. I just turned 50 this month and am booming with energy. I teach an adult/teen fitness class and plan to educate people about hemp and it's benefits. I am a vegetarian and use hemp to satisfy my protein needs. The following picture is of me in our local parade this past summer and I danced the whole way! I feel great and that's amazing since I suffered terribly from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for 20 years and lost the prime years of my life. No regrets and no looking back. Keep on Trucking! Heather P.
Heather,
We are filled with delight to hear you so full of energy, free of pain and oh so very happy! Enjoy your package of shelled hemp seeds and hemp seed oil to make more delicious smoothies with!
Healthy Regards,
Team Manitoba

Brendan Brazier and The Thrive Diet |
Brendan Brazier is a professional Ironman triathlete, the 2003 and 2006 Canadian 50km Ultra Marathon Champion, a bestselling author on performance nutrition and a vegan. He is also a Manitoba Harvest sponsored athlete and has been a supporter of Manitoba Harvest for many years. Brendan enjoys our hemp foods and oils everyday and considers them to be an integral part of daily diet.
Towards the end of 2003 Brendan was hit by a car while cycling, as a result could not race in 2004. He took advantage of the extra time on his hands and wrote a book that outlined the successful diet that had helped him improve his athletic performance at an above-average rate. THRIVE: A guide to optimal health and performance through plant-based whole foods became a Canadian bestseller within five months.
To further facilitate his teaching, Brendan has launched an extension of his wildly successful book Thrive, called The Thrive Diet. The Thrive Diet came out this year and has already become a five time Canadian Best Seller. This book is a diet plan that will make you look great, feel great and increase your energy. Brendan also provides his readers with a 12-week meal plan and 100 easy-to-make, plant based whole food recipes that you're sure to enjoy. We can all go to the kitchen and try making one of his delicious salad dressing recipes (all of which contain hemp seed oil) or his Popped Amaranth Hemp Seed Salad or even his Banana Coconut Pie. Hmmmm...
For all of you reading this in Canada, The Thrive Diet is available in some book stores and on-line here at Amazon.ca or here at Penguin Group. For our US readers, Brendan will be launching The Thrive Diet in January 2008. Keep your eyes open for it!
The Thrive Diet
reduce body fat * diminish visible signs of aging * boost energy and mental clarity * enhance mood * increase productivity * eliminate junk food cravings and hunger * build a stronger immune system * lower cholesterol * improve sleep quality * stay healthy for life
The Thrive Diet is a long-term eating plan that will help you achieve optimal health through stress-busting plant-based whole foods. It's an easy-to-follow diet that will help you understand why some foods create nutritional stress and how other foods can help eliminate it, giving you a lean body, sharp mind, and everlasting energy.
"During my career I've always surrounded myself with people who are the best in their field, whether it's my triathlon coach, an exercise scientist or massage therapist I've always sought the advice and guidance of individuals with a passion for excellence who never compromise. Brendan is simply the best nutritionalist I've found; his knowledge is second to none. I read The Thrive Diet and was enthralled that after reading so many books and meeting with so many experts, Brendan was able to explain his thoughts on nutrition in such a clear and insightful way. My Thrive Diet copy rests alone in the kitchen, tattered pages stained with beet juice and hemp oil. I only hope my competition doesn't read this book until after I'm done competing"

Quick Tips, Hints and Ideas |
Dear fellow Manitoba Harvest hemp oil lovers, try this: when your hemp oil bottle's gone 'empty' pour in a cup of orange juice, close it up and shake, shake, shake. You'll pour out the most delicious, frothy, hempy OJ you've ever tried and the last of your 'empty' bottle will be put to good use! Plus, smoooooth lips. L'chaim!
-Ezra Soiferman, Hemp Fuelled Artist, Montreal, EzSez.com
Are you a pet owner? Animals love their Omega's too, watch them here! Whether you are treating an aging or ailing pet, desire a shinier coat, want to offer added support for healthy bones and joints or simply want to offer an overall better quality of life for your animal, feed them 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of hemp seed oil on top of their normal food everyday. Birds LOVE the seeds added to their everyday mix as well! I personally feed my dog a tablespoon of hemp seed oil every morning and for a dog who's getting up there in age, she jumps around and acts like a puppy all the while showing off her absolutley stunning coat.
