Our monthly newsletter

for you to enjoy

Greetings!

It is almost officially winter and excitement is in the air as we all start looking forward to family time, down time, gifts and trips. Some things we're looking forward to...escaping the weather and heading somewhere warm, taking a break with our families and in-laws, learning the 20,001st way to use the hemp plant, designing the floor plans of our new facility. Wait, yes, that's right! Manitoba Harvest has officially been named as the new proud owner of a beautiful new facility and warehouse space not far from our existing facility and we are expanding!

Manitoba Harvest is reaching forward in 2008 to take the working model of fresh-on-demand hemp food manufacturering to another level. We are expanding and looking forward to sharing the journey with all of you as it unfolds. There will be more details and photos coming soon!

Happy Holidays,

Team Manitoba

Granola

Hemp Seed Granola

4C oats, slow cook
1C
Manitoba Harvest Shelled Hemp Seeds
1/2C brown sugar
1/2C cinnamon
2/3C raw almonds, whole or crushed
1/2C honey

1/4C Manitoba Harvest Hemp Seed Oil

Preheat oven to 340F

In a glass bowl, combine oats, shelled hemp seeds, brown sugar, cinnamon, almonds & mix well.

In a small saucepan, lightly heat honey, hemp seed and olive oil. Be sure not to allow it to boil, it just needs to be heated through.

Pour honey, hemp seed and olive oil into dry ingredients, and coat well.  Spoon granola mixture onto a cookie sheet, and bake for 25-35 minutes. Let the granola cool for about 40 minutes so it begins to harden & get crunchy.

Store or gift this granola in air tight containers. Dried fruits can be added to this recipe to create more festive flavors.

Testimonials of the Month

Greetings,

I am thankful to live in such a beautiful country like Canada. I am grateful for the benefits of raw and whole foods that are so amply supplied here in this great land. I heard that a beverage was coming out made from Hemp.  When I first heard of it I thought it was a great idea.  So, when I saw Hemp Bliss at Goodness Me Health Food Store in Hamilton, Ontario I had to try it. I only have tried the chocolate, and I love it!!!!!!  It is not too rich, nor too sweet but it really satisfies. I just want to let you know that I am grateful to have such a wonderful product! Keep up the great work.

Sincerely yours,

Philippe B.

Hello Folks,

I just wanted to send a you short message regarding my first mail order with Manitoba Harvest. I submitted my order on Sunday, November 18 and received two 5 pound pails of shelled hemp seeds on Friday, November 23. My order was confirmed immediately by Manitoba Harvest and I received updates from Canada Post when the package was sent, and then again when it was delivered (I wasn't home to receive the parcel). In my opinion this is professional, informative and prompt service.

Additionally, I was impressed with a little thing. It is the rubber gasket on your pail lids. This indicates to me that quality control and maintaining product freshness is important to you. Well done.

I had the pleasure of visiting a Manitoba Harvest booth at a 'Taste of Health' show in Vancouver, BC at the end of September. The literature was excellent, the samples generous and the show specials were attractively priced. I spoke with both representatives and appreciated their comments.

If I were a Winnipeg resident I believe I would submit an application for employment with you! I think what you are doing has a positive impact on our environment and an even greater affect on people's health.

I have been using your products for a number of years now and will continue to do so. I think you are a class organization. Many thanks.

Barry

Healthy Pregnancy,

Healthy Baby with HempIlana

EFAs During Pregnancy:

It is now estimated that approximately 90% of Americans are deficient in Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs), specifically Omega-3.  While everyone requires sufficient levels of EFAs for wellbeing, this is absolutely critical during pregnancy, as both the mother and the unborn baby require 29%-57% more of these "good fats".  EFAs must be obtained through the diet, as the body cannot manufacture them on its own, hence the word "essential".  Throughout pregnancy, the growing fetus uses EFAs from foods the mother eats.  However, if there is not enough in the diet, the fetus will take from the mother's reserve.

Omega-3:

There are two types of EFAs: Omega-3 and Omega-6.  During pregnancy, Omega-3 is needed for proper fetal development of the brain, eyes, nervous system, and immune system.  If the woman and fetus do not get enough, the nervous system and immune system may never fully develop.  This can translate into ongoing behavior, learning and immune disorders.  In addition, a deficiency of Omega-3 in the mother increases her risk of premature birth, low birth weight, and post-partum depression.

Omega-6:

Omega-6, specifically in the form of Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA), assists in the prevention of pregnancy-induced high blood pressure, otherwise known as Preeclampsia.  This disorder affects 10% of pregnant women, and often occurs in the second part of pregnancy.  It's characterized by swelling in the hands, ankles and legs.  In severe cases blood clotting can occur, which could result in stroke.

Hemp:

The EFA profile in hemp provides both Omega-3 and Omega-6 in the exact ratios the human body requires at 3:1 Omega-6 to Omega-3.  This is truly significant, as Omega-3 only occurs in only a handful of foods.  For instance, fish contains Omega-3, yet the mother and her baby can face the risk of mercury toxicity.  As for Omega-6, it is relatively easy to obtain enough Omega-6 in a typical diet, yet the Omega-6 GLA found in hemp is also only found in a limited number of food sources.  GLA is not found in fish.  Furthermore, Hemp also contains chlorophyll, which has an excellent cleansing effect on the body.  Overall, Hemp provides an excellent source of balanced EFAs, and can ultimately assist in having happy, healthy babies and mothers.

Lute Chell

Bulk & Private Label Sales Manager

Luther, better known to friends as Lute, shares his love for working with an environmentally connected, organic hemp food company that is expanding daily both in North America and internationally. "I'm in my second year with Manitoba Harvest and I love the passion our team has for this exciting hemp industry!"

Lute is married to his wife Kim and they have two beautiful children, Julia, 2 ¾ and Ben, 4 months. "Often when I come home at the end of the day, my daughter Julia greets me at the door with a hug asking if I had a good day working at "Hemp". I am very proud to educate my kids about caring for our sensitive environment and eating well!"

Lute and his whole family enjoy the virtues of hemp. Lute explains, "I have found my daughter Julia in the kitchen on occasion chugging the last drops of a liter of Hemp Bliss. We also have a Saturday morning family tradition of making homemade whole wheat hemp pancakes and lots of shelled hemp seeds are scattered daily in our cereal, in bowls of soup and on salads! The Chell's love the 5 pound bulk pail of shelled hemp seeds. My wife Kim enjoyed two healthy pregnancies now eating shelled hemp seeds and using hemp seed oil on our baby Ben's skin!"

Luther's other love is hockey! He has been playing for 37 years including a hockey scholarship to Golden Valley College in Minneapolis and then a transfer to play JV at University of North Dakota. "I have a passion for the "Canadian" game and still love to play outdoor shinny at the rinks with my teenage nephew." In my spare time I am also very active in our community and with my church as an active Board member.

The Duhks The Duhks

The most vital acoustic music being made today acknowledges its predecessors and lives in the here and now.  For four years now, The Duhks, a band of five skilled, high-energy, tattooed twenty-somethings from Winnipeg, Manitoba, has been riveting audiences and winning staunch fans across North America and around the world with just that kind of music.

Since the release of their self-titled, Bela Fleck-produced album in 2005, and the consequent re-release of their Canadian debut, Your Daughters and Your Sons, as well as this year's Sugar Hill release Migrations, the band has won admirers as diverse as David Crosby, Dolly Parton, and Doc Watson. This is not surprising, given their Duhks-alone blend of soul, gospel, North American folk, Brazilian samba, old time country string band, zydeco, and Irish dance music, and the attack they bring to these interwoven acoustic styles-which might as well be called sheer rock and roll.  Their unique sound has also earned them a Grammy Award nomination in the Best Country Vocal Performance by a Group or Duo category, one Juno Award, two additional Juno nominations, two Folk Alliance awards, and an Americana Music Association nomination for Best Emerging Artists.

In July, Manitoba Harvest was approached by Tania Elizabeth of The Duhks to gain support through sponsorship and to offer an opportunity to create an even larger platform for sustainability in our world. We are 100% behind The Duhks and are committed to supporting the mission of these fantastic musicians and humans along their greening path. We look forward to teaching each other many things.

"As a full-time touring musician, it's so important to be diligent about caring for yourself, and as a human being it's important to feel like you can make a difference.  These are two reasons that I love Manitoba Harvest.  I love your hemp oil and seeds -  I throw them on everything (they make a great pesto too!), and as a step-daughter of an organic hemp farmer (in Saskatchewan), I really appreciate how you support Canadian farmers. Most of our touring is in the United States, and we're on the road about 9 months of the yearWe see Manitoba Harvest products in grocery and health food stores all over North America (and Europe!), and it makes us proud to see another Manitoba company having so much success.  We are so proud to have partnered with Manitoba Harvest to achieve our highest goal - "to be the change that we wish to see in the world". - Tania Elizabeth, The Duhks
